The Battle for ‘Byggeren’ was a violent protest that happened in the neighborhood of Nørrebro, in the City of Copenhagen (Denmark). After the demolition of some buildings in 1973 an empty space with no planned activity for the next years was used by the neighbors. The community created a DIY playground for children, giving this empty place a new life. They called it Byggeren, and had a big impact on this area of Copenhagen; at some point it even rivalized with other state children institutions in popularity. But the city hall already made some plans for the Byggeren area: they cleared the playground in 1979 and soon the neighbors got organized. The biggest protests happened during April and Byggeren was rebuilt, but finally the police declared the state of emergency in Nørrebro and the City of Copenhagen carried out its plans.
